Since 2016, Dr Alissa Beath has convened, lectured, and tutored research methods and statistics to undergraduate psychology students at all year levels, with a particular focus on first year. To students who choose Psychology to ‘help people,’ research methods and statistics curricula are considered a barrier, rather than facilitator, of this goal.
I feel privileged to lead students’ first exposure to the science of Psychology. I create engaging resources and safe learning spaces to foster transformative learning experiences. I use humour via memes and cartoons, which research shows creates a warm learning environment and actively aids learning.
Research shows that up to 80% of Psychology students experience statistics anxiety. Alissa’s pedagogy empowers students to succeed with empathy and humour.
“Dr Beath helped reduce my fear of stats with her lively personality and stats memes. She…never made me feel guilty for not knowing something. I aced stats in the end of the unit.” – 2021 MQ student
The Assessment Panel commended Alissa’s dedication to transformative teaching across a variety of settings and to a broad range of students and her awareness of changes needed to course-level curriculum, whilst understanding the needs of students from non-traditional and non-academic backgrounds.
